New map of California coronavirus tiers: 3 red and 3 orange counties

Plumas was the only California county to change its coronavirus status in the updates announced Tuesday, Feb. 16. It went from purple to red.

The switch in status allows looser restrictions including indoor restaurants, gyms and museums, with capacity limits.

The largely rural county, which includes the cities of Quincy and Chester, had nine active COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, its public health department said. Since the start of the pandemic, it has recorded 647 cases and six deaths.

Plumas joins Mariposa and Del Norte counties in the red status, indicating “substantial” risk. Trinity, Alpine and Sierra are in the orange category (“moderate” risk). All other California counties remain in the most restrictive tier, purple.
