Florida added 6,277 coronavirus cases and 81 deaths Saturday, continuing a steady march toward the 1-million case mark.
The statewide total of cases recorded since March now stands at 985,297, according to the Florida Department of Health. Over the last week, an average of 7,639 cases have been announced each day.
Florida’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 18,677. The death average increased slightly, to about 75 people per day.
Hospitalizations: An additional 128 people were reported admitted to the hospital. In total, more than 3,900 people are currently hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the state Agency for Health Care Administration. More than 800 of those are in the Tampa Bay area.
The number of people hospitalized has been steadily increasing in recent weeks alongside the number of cases, though Friday’s numbers were roughly the same as those earlier in the week.
About 29 percent of hospital beds and 24 percent of intensive care unit beds were available across Florida. In Tampa Bay, about 29 percent of hospital beds and 22 percent of ICU beds were available.
Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 7.3 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 43 states that doesn’t meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation for a rate of 5 percent or below.
A higher positivity rate can indicate that there isn’t widespread enough testing to capture mild and asymptomatic coronavirus cases. The positivity rate has decreased over the past week as testing has increased. It’s down more than 1 percentage point compared to a week ago.
Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 1,090 coronavirus cases and 18 deaths Saturday.
Ten deaths were reported in Pinellas County, three each in Hillsborough and Manatee counties, and two in Polk County. Citrus, Hernando and Pasco did not report any deaths.
As of Saturday’s counts, Hillsborough has 57,728 cases and 928 deaths; Pinellas has 32,630 cases and 899 deaths; Polk has 27,300 cases and 675 deaths; Manatee has 16,570 cases and 375 deaths; Pasco has 14,619 cases and 273 deaths; Hernando has 4,929 cases and 208 deaths; and Citrus has 4,700 cases and 166 deaths.
