Two Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies ambushed by a single gunman

Two Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies shot multiple times by an unknown shooter, ‘critically injuring’ them both.

The claim: President Trump tweeted about two officers injured in an ambush in Los Angeles county and pledged a donation

President Donald Trump’s prolific tweets not only draw attention to specific events in the news, they serve as a rallying point for supporters to his viewpoint on unfolding events.

A Facebook user on Sept. 14 republished a purported Trump tweet regarding the Sept. 12 ambush of two deputy sheriffs who were shot as they sat in a parked patrol car in Los Angeles County.

The Facebook user added his own commentary to the post: “I know where my president stands.” USA TODAY has reached out to the user for comment.

The tweet, also dated Sept. 14 at 4:55 p.m., said:

“Once the 2 ambushed officers are recovered enough, I will be visiting them and letting them know AMERICA loves them. I will also personally be donating each of the 2 officers $500,000 each to help with expenses! RT RT RT to show DEMS we love our police”

A fake Trump Twitter account

Although the account is topped by the familiar photo of Trump beside the heading “Donald J. Trump,” there are telltales signs that the account is fake.

It does not have the Twitter verified blue check mark next to the name. Instead, the check mark is photoshopped into Trump’s profile picture and an American flag appears where a blue check normally appears.

The full Twitter name of the fake account is “RealDonaldTrwp”; the official account is RealDonaldTrump.

The purported tweet also does not show up among the 133 Trump tweets or retweets from Sept. 14, or among his deleted tweets, according to a search of a database of Trump tweets at Factbase.

The fact-checking sites Check Your Fact and Lead Stories both note that the Twitter account in question has been suspended.
