Broncos bench QB Jeff Driskel, replace him with Brett Rypien

The Denver Broncos benched quarterback Jeff Driskel in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and replaced him with Brett Rypien.

Driskel was starting in the place of an injured Drew Lock. Driskel struggled to identify blitzes and threw several erratic passes before being benched. He finished the day 17-of-30 passing for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception, good for a 71.0 passer rating.

Rypien (6-2, 202 pounds) signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State last year. He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad, serving as a backup for three games when Joe Flacco and Lock were both injured (Brandon Allen started those contests).

During his four years with college football’s Broncos, Rypien completed 64 percent of his passes for 13,581 yards with 90 touchdowns against 29 interceptions. He is the nephew of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, who won two Super Bowls with Washington.

Denver was trailing 28-10 when Rypien entered Sunday’s game.
