The University of Cincinnati Bearcats football team made the dive from No. 20 to No. 13 in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday.
The Bearcats are the highest-ranked non-Power 5 team, one spot ahead of fellow American Athletic Conference group UCF. UC was selected 2nd behind the Golden Knights in the AAC preseason media poll. After all Department I groups were qualified to be voted on for the preseason Leading 25, the panel of 61 voters was permitted to consider only groups playing in the fall now that the season has started. That indicated preseason No. 2 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State and
No. 9 Oregon, together with 6 other Big 10 and Pac-12 teams, dropped out of the rankings. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American Conference and Mountain West have actually postponed their seasons, but the Big Ten is taking some actions towards a possible mid-October start. With those teams gone, Alabama went up to No. 2. Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by
No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Florida. Protecting champ LSU, with one first-place vote, is No. 6. Clemson remained at No. 1. UC opens its season Saturday, hosting Austin
Peay at noon.Poll The Top 25 groups in The Associated Press college football poll, with first-place votes in parentheses, records through Sep. 12, overall points based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote, and previous ranking: Record Pts Prv 1.
